Mailing Lists

Tech-talk is the main list which most members of the community subscribe to, and is appropriate for all EPICS-related discussions, general questions and even job postings where there is an EPICS component to the position.

Subscribing to a mailing list

There are two ways to read to mailing list messages:

Via RSS:

You can be notified about the arrival of new messages at the list archive without having to subscribe to the mailing list, using the RSS feed found on the appropriate mailing list. You can for example use Feedly for reading RSS feeds (it also has apps for both Android and iOS), but there are many readers available, built into web browsers, as stand-alone programs or apps, or purely online.

All EPICS mailing lists are moderated for messages sent by non-members, so if you haven’t subscribed using the Mailman interface your messages will be held for approval before being circulated. If you prefer to use the RSS interface to read messages but want to avoid the moderation delay, you can subscribe to the emails but configure Mailman to not actually send you any messages.

Via Email:

To have mailing list messages forwarded to your email inbox, visit the mailman information page for the mailing list and fill in the subscription form there. You can also subscribe via email; send a message to the request email address (e.g. tech-talk-request@aps.anl.gov) that contains just the word “help” in either the subject or message body for further instructions.

To send a message to a list

In general you should subscribe if you intend to send messages to this list (note that you can subscribe but turn message delivery off if you normally read tech-talk through the RSS feed). If you aren’t subscribed, your message will have to be approved by a list moderator, which will delay its delivery. However it should eventually get through (unless it looks like spam), so a subscription is not essential.

Some broken mail programs may try to send messages to the bounce-address (e.g. tech-talk-bounces@aps.anl.gov) which is the envelope return address used for all outgoing messages and is only supposed to receive information about messages that can’t be delivered. If you do not correct this address before sending, your messages will be delayed as they will have to be forwared by the list owner.
